is slightly in excess of that given by me.
The total deaths as ascertained were 1,258 for the year—males, 656;
females, 602.
All the deaths registered were properly certified as to their cause by a
doctor or the coroner.
The deaths represent a crude death.rate of 9.56 per 1,000 of the
estimated population, and when corrected for age and sex distribution
by multiplication with the factor 11)572 becomes 10.1, or the rate upon
which we base our comparisons with other portions of the kingdom.
The death.rate for England and Wales for 1908 was 14.7 or 4.6 per
1,000 greater than here; that of the "76 Great Towns"—one of which
we form—was 15.8 or 5.7 in excess of Walthamstow.
Excluding the "76 Great Towns "and the "142 Smaller Towns,"
our rate would be still 3.7 below the most favoured parts of the country.
The terms of comparison are alike in being based upon populations
estimated and death.rates corrected for age and sex distribution by the
Registrar.General.
The birth, death and infantile mortality rates of the following
districts of the outer zone ot London, compared with your own, will be
of interest. The localities are selected as presenting many features in
common, Croydon, Willesden, and Hornsey being the most favoured
