All new notifications were visited and all cases on the
register visited periodically throughout the year.
With the consent of the notifying practitioner, many
new cases were referred to the Tuberculosis Officer and the
School Medical Officer arranged to examine all contacts of
school age in the affected households.
MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
The duty of caring for the health of mothers and young
children offers more scope for valuable work of a true
preventive character than any of the other efforts which are
being made to preserve life and health. It may be predicted
with confidence that many of the defects which are now
met with during medical examination of children of school
age, will not be found when supervision of the children
between the ages of two and four years is carried out in a
manner equal in efficiency to that now available for school
children and young infants. This, no doubt, will come in
time, and merely requires some expansion of the medical
and nursing staff for its satisfactory realisation.
A description of the scheme as at present developed in
the district shows that although much valuable work is
being done, there are gaps which are either entirely unbridged,
or over which the bridges are of a somewhat
slender character. This is specially seen in connection with
the care of expectant mothers and the provision of beds in
a maternity home or hospital.
Committee.
The Maternity and Child Welfare Committee is the
Health Committee of the Council. Three lady members
are co-opted and a sub-committee attends to matters of
detail.
