efficiently covered and 108 draw-off taps were placed on the
house mains in substitution for the supply from uncovered
and often inaccessible cisterns.
Drainage, Sewerage, and Closet Accommodation.
The sewerage system is arranged on the "separate"
system, and the sewage is dealt with at the Council's
Sewage Disposal Works.
Practically all the houses in the district are connected
with the sewerage system and 99.9 per cent. have water
closets.
The satisfactory condition which obtains in the district
generally, does not apply to the considerable area known
as Eel Pie Island. On the Island there is an hotel, 20
bungalows and week-end residences, besides tea gardens,
and in addition to the regular summer residents, many
thousands of persons resort to the island for short periods
of one day or less.
The island is not sewered and no collection of house
refuse is arranged by the Council. This unsatisfactory
state of affairs has been brought to the attention of the
Council on several occasions.
Scavenging.
Scavenging is efficiently carried out by the Local
Authority under the supervision of the Surveyor. Collection
is made once weekly except in a few instances where a
special daily collection is made. The refuse is destroyed
by burning in the Council's destructor, and during the year
5,712 tons were thus disposed of.
178 sanitary dustbins were supplied in place of those
found defective.
