cases of infectious disease. The Council expressed the views
that they were unable to entertain the proposal.
The Council had also under consideration the question of
expenses incurred in connection with the maintenance of
patients at the hospital and adopted a scale of charges.
A general alteration in the procedure of ordering stores
and applying the same was made.
Tuberculosis.
During the year there were 27 deaths registered in
the District duo to Phthisis, and 13 to other tubercula
diseases, a total of 40 deaths due to tuberculosis.
The Council had under consideration an Order made by
the Local Government Board respecting the notification of the
disease, which provided that the Medical Officer of a Poor
Law Institution should within forty-eight hours after his first
recognition of the symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis in a
person who was an inmate of any Institution, or a Medical
Poor Law Officer who was attending professionally a poor
person according to his agreement with a Board of Guardians,
post to the Medical Officer of Health of the sanitary district in
which the person resided, or had resided, a notification of the
case. The remuneration would be at the rate of one shilling
for every notification, and such fee would be payable by the
Council. The Medical Officer of Health of the district upon
receipt of such notification would record the same in a register
kept for that purpose. The Local Government Board observed
that it was desirable that sanitary authorities acting on the
advice of the Medical Officer of Health, should utilise their
powers for the purpose of preventing the spread of the
infection from pulmonary tuberculosis.
The Council expressed favourable opinions of the Order
and gave directions in respect of the matter.
Under the Public Health (Tuberculosis) Regulations 1908,
which are applicable only to protect those who came under the
care of Poor Law Medical Officers, I received the following
particulars:—
During the year the number of notifications received
under Form A (which gives the address of the patient prior
to admission to a Poor Law Institution) were five.
