4 in the district and 1 outside. Four of these died at their
own homes and 3 of them were so dangerously ill that
their removal to the Isolation Hospital was considered inadvisable.
The "outside" case contracted the disease a month
after her removal from Twickenham and died at the Evelina
Hospital. The method of dealing with the disease was exactly
similar to previous years, viz., the examination gratis of swabs
taken from the affected part and free distribution of AntiDiphtheric
Serum. The use thereof undoubtedly had the effect
of deterring the spread of the disease and effecting cures.
Inquests.
During the past year 28 inquests have been held. The
findings of the juries were as follows:—
5 Heart Disease.
2 Found Drowned.
1 Apoplexy.
1 Congestion of lungs,
1 Found killed on the railway.
1 Fit following congestion of lungs.
1 Hemorrhage in the brain.
1 Starvation and pneumonia.
9 Accidental—
1 suffocated in bed.
2 burns.
1 scalds.
1 fall.
2 fall downstairs.
1 fall from window.
1 knocked down by horse and cart.
6 Suicides
1 gas poisoning.
1 oxalic acid poisoning.
1 cutting arteries of wrist.
1 hanging.
] by salts of lemon.
1 by shooting with revolver.
There were 12 postmortem examinations performed at
the mortuary out of 24 bodies which were received therein.
