"Private. Cross Deep,
Twickenham,
22nd February, 1902.
Dear Sir,
You are probably aware that any case of Small
Pox which may be notified in this District will be
removed to the Hospital, The Mereway, Twickenham.
Realising the anxiety which sometimes occurs in
arriving at a correct diagnosis in the early stages of
Chicken Pox and other cutaneous eruptions I wish to
intimate to you that I will visit any doubtful case you may
have in my District at any time and although possibly I
may not be able to throw any further light on the case, I
shall be glad to share the responsibility with you in
deciding as whether it should be removed to the Hospital
or not.
I am, Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
W. MARSTON CLARK,
Medical Officer of Health."
The offer was taken advantage of by several
Medical Practitioners, and was it is believed the means of
detecting all the cases.
The first case of Small Pox occurred on the 10th
March. Source of contagion, Nice, or travelling therefrom.
The case, a female, 26 years of age was removed
to the Mereway Hospital. The patient had been
vaccinated in infancy. All contacts were re-vaccinated
and kept under supervision with most effectual results.
