Seven combined drains, for the repair of which the Council were responsible under Section 4 of the Public Health Act, 1875, were reconstructed by the Council at a total cost of £584 13s. 11d., made up as follows:-

The increasing annual expenditure in relaying
these drains, led the Council to promote a
Bill in Parliament for relieving them of the
responsibility thrown upon them in this respect;
and I am pleased to report that this Bill passed
both Houses of Parliament and received the
Royal Assent in July.
The relief to the ratepayers of the district,
owing to the passing of this Bill, is likely to be
considerable, the expense incurred by the Council
in relaying combined drains since 1904, being as
shown in the following table:—
