Water Closets without proper and
sufficient Flushing Apparatus.
As there was an uncertainty of
the legal powers as to dealing with
certain conveniences in the Borough
which were without any flushing apparatus, the Health Committee
in previous years did not insist on such apparatus in old buildings.
During the past year, attention being again called to the matter,
the Town Clerk reported that such powers were contained, in his
opinion, in Section 36 of the Public Health Act, 1875. Action was
taken in connection with 133 houses and a suitable flushing
apparatus was fitted in each instance. In most of the houses the
defect was due to water not being laid on, consequently the procedure
taken led to this being remedied. In nearly every instance
the drains were found defective, and as a result these were relaid
or rearranged on modern lines. It is proposed to lay a surface
water sewer along the front of Benn's Cottages and to pave the
passage, at an estimated cost of £205.
Sanitary
Conveniences.
The Sanitary Convenience for Women erected at
Kew Bridge was completed early in the year. The
new Sanitary Conveniences for Men at Kew Bridge
and River Walk were put in use at the latter part of the previous
year.
Open Space,
North Sheen.
The purchase of four acres of land, belonging to
the Popham Estate, for the purpose of a Recreation
Ground for the North Sheen district was
sanctioned by the Council at the meeting in October.
Sewer Ventilation
As a result of a report from the Medical Officer
of Health arrangements are being made for further
ventilation of the sewers by means of ventilating
shafts in different parts of the Borough.

previous Annual Reports as has also the method of
disposal of sewage.
During the year 52 bodies were received at the

examinations were made upon 38 bodies and 52 inquests were held.
