SECTION III.
SPECIAL SANITARY MATTERS.
Water Supply to
the Borough.
The "added areas" of Kew, North Sheen and
Petersham are supplied entirely by water from
what was formerly the Southwark and Vauxhall
Water Company (now the Metropolitan Water Board). Richmond
is supplied with water from the deep well (chalk stratum), Petersham
well and Southwark & Vauxhall Water. Roughly speaking,
equal proportions of these waters are pumped to a Reservoir in
Richmond Park and supplied to the town by gravitation.
The Fountain
Spring,
Petersham.
As the water of this spring has locally a great
reputation for purity, and as many people drink
it, the Medical Officer of Health has analysed
samples on two occasions, during dry weather
and after heavy rain. Both samples showed no signs of contamination
and as far as Chemical Analysis can show it is a good water
for drinking and domestic purposes.
Constant Supply.
Houses adjacent to the water main extending
from the Waterworks to Richmond Park, as well
as those in the Petersham and North Sheen districts have a
constant water supply, whereas those in Kew and a part of Richmond
have not. As there are so many advantages in having a constant
water supply it is desirable that these advantages should be
extended to the whole of the Borough as soon as it can be arranged.
The matter is under the consideration of the Water Committee.
Condemned Wells.
In four houses where the only source of water
supply was by pumps connected with shallow
wells the Medical Officer of Health, upon analysis, found the water
unfit for drinking purposes in each instance. Notices were served
