Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
I beg to present my report upon the work carried out
during the year 1913, under the various Acts and Orders affect
ing the Public Health Department.
Systematic inspection of the houses in various streets in
the district has been carried out, in accordance with the orders
of the Local Government Board.
Two hundred and sixty-six notices were issued, of which
number 22 were statutory, and issued by instruction of the
Council.
In a considerable number of cases verbal intimation was
sufficient to secure the abatement of nuisances. In no case was
it found necessary to institute legal proceedings.
The drainage systems of 11 houses have been reconstructed,
and repairs carried out at 14.
In August last, Mr. F. J. Thick commenced his duties as
Assistant Inspector, and has proved to be an efficient and trustworthy
officer.
In consequence of this appointment, it has been possible to
increase the number of premises visited in the course of house
to house inspection, and a considerable amount of work carried
out and supervised where nuisances or defects were found to
exists.
A tabulated summary of the inspections made, and defective
conditions remedied, will be found at the end of this report.
