those who are in a position to grant certificates of exemption
should consider well their responsibilities.
Most conscientious objectors, however misguided we may
consider them, are persons of cleanly habits, temperate in
living, abstaining from alcohol and often believers in fanciful
dietaries. It is probably true that abstainers from alcohol
are less liable to contract infectious disorders; and it is also
possibly true that a heavy meat diet makes people more liable
to take infection, but this theory has not the same amount of
scientific proof as in the case of alcohol.
Those who give exemption certificates should therefore
be careful not to grant them to careless persons, and those
given to over indulgence in alcohol and meat.
