The mortality of infants under one year attending' Ilford
infant welfare centres was 11.3 per 1,000, as compared with 46.3
per 1,000 in those not attending; a welfare centre (excluding the
deaths of those children dying in the Girls' Village Homes, also
the child in the South Hainault Ward who had attended a centre
outside Ilford).
It must be remembered in considering these figures that
rarely is a baby brought to a welfare centre under 1 month
of age, whereas the majority of deaths occur in this period.
