PREFACE.
To the Chairman and Members of the
ILFORD URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL.
Gentlemen,
Every Medical Officer of Health appointed under an
order of the Local Government Board is required to make an
Annual Report with regard to the Sanitary District which is
under his superintendence.
I herewith beg to present my Annual Report for the
year, 1905.
I estimate the total population at 65,021, or, excluding
the Public Institutions 60,411; a great deal of trouble has
been expended in the endeavour to get this as correct as
possible, and I believe the above estimate to be fairly accurate.
The death-rate for the year was 8.9, or connected for age
and sex distribution so as to be comparable with other
district, 9.6.
The birth-rate was 26.25. On looking at the tables it
will be seen how small is the increase in the number of births
compared with the growth of the population. So that the
birth-rate for Ilford, in the same way as in the country
generally, is gradually and steadily falling. No nation which
is unable to freely renew its population can hope to remain
in the forefront in these days; and this falling off in the
birth-rate, if continued, is a most serious matter.
