Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
In this district 14 children were notified as suffering from this
disease, 7 of the cases occurring at the Infirmary. This is equal to
a case rate of 13 4 per 1,000 births occurring in the district, but
it will be noted that half the cases occurred at the Infirmary,
many of them probably coming from addresses outside the
district.
I know of no other disease where true appreciation of the
principles of preventive medicine when carried into effect are
attended with such marked results, and there is no disease when
it does occur which requires such thorough and continuous treatment
to bring about a cure.
