In my last report I commented at some length on the
Longford River Water Supply. In the beginning of the
year I wrote to the Secretary of H.M. Office of Works
stating that it had been brought to my notice that
several bouses situated close to Hampton Court Palace
were supplied with water from the Longford River, and
that the water was unfiltered. I asked for a complete
list of premises so supplied, and also for permission to
view tbe Pumping Station and other sources of the
water supply from the Longford River. In the reply to
this letter there was enclosed by direction of the First
Commissioner of H.M. Works a schedule of the premises
situate in the district of Hampton Wick supplied wholly
or partially witb unfiltered water from the Longford
River, and I was also informed that in any case where
I found that such supply was being used for drinking
purposes, the Board would be prepared to withdraw tbe
supply and terminate the licence.
The Board also kindly granted me permission to
view the pumping station and the other sources of the
Water Supply from the Longford River.
Mr. Chart, the Resident Surveyor at Hampton Court
Palace, very courteously afforded me the necessary
facilities for this, and lie accompanied the Sanitary
Inspector and myself, showing us over the various
arrangements for this water supply. The sources of this
water supply are from two places. One is from the pond
in the pheasantry in Bushev Park; tbe Longford River
flows through this pond. The other is from the Pumping
Station. This is situated near the Hampton Isolation
Hospital, but although the water is pumped to certain
houses and to the parks and gardens of Hampton Court
Palace from this water mill, the water is extracted from
the Longford River higher up at Hanworth. The pumping
is carried out by means of a water mill, the water
power being derived from a small waterfall in the Longford
River.
