ROOFS, RAINWATER PIPES AND EAVES-GUTTERS.
At 504 houses Notices were served to abate nuisances caused
by leaky roofs, defective eaves gutters or rainwater pipes. It is
essential to the health and comfort of the inmates of a dwelling
house that the roof shall be kept at all times watertight and that
the eaves gutters and rainwater pipes shall carry off the water to
the drains. Much difficulty has been experienced in obtaining
material, and in consequence property has deteriorated, but in
the near future things will again resume normal conditions. In
the meantime a little patience on one side and more energy on the
other must be exercised.
DIRTY PREMISES.
This term includes walls and ceilings being dirty and
dilapidated or in such a condition as to be a nuisance. Notices
have been served in respect of 548 premises. The figures are
comparartively low compared with pre-war times, but as work is
now resuming normal conditions a considerable increase must
quickly follow.
DRINKING WATER.
Work to improve the drinking water supply has been done in
52 houses. In 25 instances improved storage, 12 cisterns cleansed
and covered, and at 15 houses water reinstated.
YARD AND FORECOURT PAVING.
The paving of the yard immediately adjoining the dwelling
house is an important factor in keeping the house dry and clean,
and under the provisions of the East Ham Improvement Act 100
square feet can be insisted upon. At 73 houses during the year
paving work has been performed.
LAVATORIES AND URINALS.
There are 40 urinals in the Borough (excluding those in the
Public Parks). 28 are attached to licensed premises and to which
the public have access. Special attention has been given by the
District Inspectors to cleansing and lighting, and 202 inspections
have been made. There are 4 public underground conveniences
where Attendants are in charge and a standard of efficiency
