It is hoped that when the next Annual Report is written it will be
able to refer to the horses as relics of the past. We are anxiously
awaiting the delivery of a fleet of six electric dust vans, which
will, we confidently expect, effect a considerable saving in the
cost of work, and provide a more efficient method of collection.

TRADE REFUSE.
Trade refuse is collected twice weekly from shops in the
Borough. Special vans are allocated to this work, and 'during the
year 1,143 loads have been dealt with.
WASTE MATERIAL SALVED FROM THE REFUSE.
In the spring of the year a scheme was adopted by the
Council sanctioning the salvaging from the dust, material with a
market value. The scheme provided that 50 per cent. of the
profits should be given to the men. At the time this work was
commenced prices obtainable for goods were very high, but when
the war ceased prices dropped, as did the amount of material
salved.
