As a result of the 5,475 inspections made of premises in the
Borough, some 3,514 nuisances were discovered. These nuisances
comprised choked and defective drains, dirty and dilapidated walls
and ceilings, defective yard pavings, leaky roofs, drinking water
improperly stored in cisterns, unsound food, offensive accumulations,
defective sanitary appliances, animals (particularly poultry)
kept near dwelling houses in dirty condition, etc.
To obtain the abatement of the nuisances referred to in the
table necessitated the serving of 1,051 preliminary notices, 86
statutory notices, 14 water notices, 159 dust bin notices, a large
number of intimation letters, together with numerous interviews.
COMPLAINTS RECEIVED
During the year, 1,218 complaints were received, 589 written
and 629 verbal, the figures for the previous year being 1,157 complaints,
678 written and 479 verbal. The majority of the written
complaints were anonymous.
