FOOD AND DRUGS ACT.

Details of legal proceedings instituted under this Act will be
found on pages 57 and 58.
Cautions have been given where proceedings were not
advisable.
FOOD INSPECTION.
The inspection of food is carried out as far as possible by
the Inspectors and myself, but in a Borough of this size there
should be sufficient work for a special Inspector to devote most
of his time to this work.
During the latter part of the year since the outbreak of war
there has been a great demand for meat to supply the troops and
a considerable amount of slaughtering has taken place at the
slaughter-houses in the Borough.
HOUSING, TOWN PLANNING, Etc., ACT, 1909.
Systematic inspection of dwelling houses under the above Act
has been carried out in the Borough as requested by the Order
of the Local Government Board. Article 5 requires the Medical
Officer of Health to include in his Annual Report information and
particulars as to the inspections made and results.
The following is a statement of the work carried out:—
(1) Number of houses inspected, 1,329.
(2) Number of houses found unfit for habitation, 1.
(3) Number of representations to the Local Authority, 1.
(4) Number of closing orders made, 1.
(5) Number of houses remedied without closing order, 809.
(6) Number of closing orders determined, 1.
(7) Number of houses dealt with under Section 15, Nil.
(8) Number of houses dealt with under Public Health Act,
2,311.
General character of defects:—
Dirty walls and ceilings.
Drinking.water improperly stored.
Defective flushing apparatuses.
Soil pans foul and broken.
Yards and forecourts improperly paved.
