Defective Clothing and Boots.
The percentage of children found with defective clothing was
more satisfactory than in the previous year.
The children with defective boots was about the same as in
1913.
In a large number of cases there appeared to be a lack of
knowledge of the hygienic value of clothing for children.
Some children are found to be overloaded with clothing,
whilst others are underclothed both in quantity and quality.
38 boys and 25 girls were found wearing dirty clothing.
These are to be found in those children who either have no
mother to look after them or where the parent spends the time
that should be spent at home in visiting beer-houses or places of
amusement.
Squint.
70 boys and 50 girls were found to have this defect, giving a
percentage of 1.7 in boys and 1.31 in girls.
The majority of the parents will be advised to follow treatment
prescribed by the Ophthalmic Surgeon, but there are still a
few stupid parents who inform the doctor that " the child has
had the squint since birth, and they do not see that it should be
interfered with now."
Shades are provided free of charge and advice given for
treatment, but often it is found that the prescribed treatment has
not been carried out.
