County Borough of East Ham Education Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Mrs. Ford, and Gentlemen,—
I beg to submit my Annual Report as School Medical Officer
for the year ending December 31st, 1914.
The staff was increased by the appointment of Dr. D. Brough
as second Assistant Medical Officer and Nurse Mallon as third
School Nurse.
Dr. Brough, Nurses Forbes and Mallon have been granted
leave of absence to take up duties in connection with the War,
Dr. Brough being granted a temporary commission in the
R.A.M.C. and the Nurses are connected with Military Hospitals.
Details of the work accomplished during the year found in
the following pages will show that increased work has been
carried out as required by the Board of Education.
During the year there were medically examined 8,339 children,
of which number 7,881 were routine cases and 458 special
cases.
These were included in the following groups:—
A group of children " Entrants."
(a) Aged 12-13 years.
Ditto (b) Aged 13 years and
over (Leavers).
For the year beginning on April 1st, 1915, the Board of
Education in their Circular 823 issued on August 18th, 1913, gave
notice that provision must be made for the medical inspection of
another age group, viz., those of children between 8 and 9 years
of age.
The alteration to the children in the group between the age of
12 and 13 years has remedied the leakage which formerly
occurred in " Leavers."
