of £3 against the male defendant and dismissed that against the
female. The fine was paid and soon after the squatters left the
district.
TEMPORARY BUILDINGS.
The erection of 23 temporary buildings contrary to the
Council's Bye-Laws have been detected by the Inspectors. The
figures for the previous year were 34. These structures are usually
found at the rear of premises, and are used for various purposes,
generally for the keeping of animals. They are frequently erected
adjacent to the house with a total disregard to the ventilation of
the dwelling. All breaches of the Council's Regulations in this
respect have been reported to the Borough Engineer with a view to
their removal, and in many instances the Works Committee have
insisted upon the demolition of these structures.
SCHOOLS.
The public elementary and private schools have been
systematically inspected, special attention being given to the
drains, gullies, latrines, urinals, etc. In the public schools the
gullies and drains are flushed regularly by the Council's drain
fiushers. The caretakers are responsible for the cleansing of the
latrines and urinals. In most of the schools the work is done
satisfactorily. In the private schools, which number 10, the
tendency is to overcrowd, and once during the year the attention
of a proprietor had to be called to the fact.
PETROLEUM LICENCES.
The premises licensed by the Council for storage of petroleum
have been inspected before the annual renewal of Licences. In
every case of renewal, or application for a new Licence, the
provisions of the Act of Parliament have been insisted upon.
DISINFECTANTS
Have been supplied to Ratepayers requiring them from the four
depots situated in the north, south and centre of the Borough.
These four stations are a great convenience to the public. They
are open daily, and from them during the year 44 tons of Carbolic
Powder and 1,600 gallons of Disinfectant Fluid have been
distributed.
