Employment of Children Act.
Under the Employment of Children Act the Council have made
Bye-laws, and it is provided that no child under 14 years of age
shall work in or in connection with any shop after 8 p.m. During
the year 15 cases were brought before the Court by the Public
Health Department, and fines imposed in each case. They referred
to 13 boys and 2 girls—6 boys and one girl working in
barbers' shops. The case of the girl was that she was only ten
years of age, and employed by her father to lather men as late as
10 p.m. The second girl was 12 years of age, and employed by her
father to serve fish from a stall after 11 p.m. The remaining boys
were employed to discharge miscellaneous work in connection
with shops.
