As the result of the 5,627 inspections made of premises in the
Borough, some 5,212 nuisances were discovered. These nuisances
comprised choked and defective drains, dirty and dilapidated walls
and ceilings, defective yard pavings, leaky roofs, drinking water
improperly stored in cisterns, unsound food, offensive accumulations,
defective sanitary appliances, animals (particularly poultry)
kept near dwelling houses in dirty condition, etc.
To obtain the abatement of the nuisances referred to in the
table necessitated the serving of 1,725 preliminary notices, 81
statutory notices, 8 water notices, 193 dust bin notices, a large
number of intimation letters, together with numerous interviews,
and in 11 instances legal proceedings were instituted.
