Schools.—The Public and Private Elementary Schools are
periodically visited and the sanitary appliances examined. The
general condition of the Latrines, Urinals, Gullies, etc., has
been found to be satisfactory, most of the caretakers taking
keen interest in endeavouring to keep the school for which
they are responsible, clean.
Disinfectants.—For the general convenience of the inhabitants,
the Council have four stations for distribution of
disinfectants. They are situated in different parts of the
Borough. The Town Hall is the principal depot and store,
the others are at Church Road, Cyprus, New Beckton, and
North Woolwich Manor Way. These issuing depots are
much appreciated. Disinfectants are obtainable free of charge
in all cases of Infectious Disease, etc.
Dairies and Cowsheds.—There are seven registered cowsheds
and 155 dairies in the Borough and during the year, 317
inspections have been made. Details of the inspections are
entered in the Dairies Register. In the cowsheds special
attention has been given to enforce the regulations made by
the Council under the Dairies, Cowsheds and Milkshops Order,
regulating cubic capacity for the cows, proper and suitable
lighiing, ventilation, drainage, water supply, cleansing, limewashing,
etc.
No serious breach of the regulations has been reported,
but it has been necessary to write threatening letters on one
or two occasions for laxity in general cleanliness.
In connection with these Milk Stores and Dairies, much
care has been exercised to see that utensils are clean, adequate
provision is made for providing boiling water for cleansing, and
that the storage of milk and appliances is not subject to
contaminating influences.
Unsound Food.—The Market places have been regularly
inspected and on occasions unsound food has been discovered
exposed for sale, by the Inspector.
The cases were not flagrant and no legal proceedings were
instituted.
