In calculating the Mortality rate, cases incorrectly
diagnosed have been excluded. Also in connection with
Diphtheria the death-rate is calculated on actual cases of
clinical Diphtheria, "carrier cases" and cases incorrectly
diagnosed being both excluded.
SCARLET FEVER.
572 cases of this disease were under treatment during the
year. In only five instances was the diagnosis incorrect,
the patients being subsequently found to be suffering from some
other disease.
Excluding the 42 patients remaining in Hospital at the end
of the year (1909) there were 530 completed cases of this disease
treated, of these 10 died, giving a death-rate of 1.88 per cent.
as compared with a rate of 3.6 for the previous year.
Three of the fatal cases died within twenty-four hours of
admission. Another admitted with both Measles and Scarlet
Fever, developed Pneumonia, which proved fatal. The remainder
either had some other infection in addition to Scarlet
Fever, or developed various serious complications.
All the fatal cases occurred in the last six months of the
year. During the first six months, 254 cases were treated
without a single death.

The chief complications which occurred in the 572 cases under treatment during the year were as follows:—

In many instances patients were admitted who were either
suffering from or were in the incubation stage of some other
Infectious disease in addition to Scarlet Fever, others had
various conditions present, not necessarily infectious, but which
needed treatment.
