The only part with which we are concerned, from a Public
Health point of view, is Section 122, dealing with Verminous
Children. This states that "where any Sanitary Authority
within the district of a local Education Authority have provided
premises or appliances for cleansing the person or
clothing of persons infested with vermin, the Sanitary Authority
shall allow the local Education Authority to use such premises
and appliances for the purpose of this section upon such payment,
if any, as may be agreed between them."
The building lately used as a Dogs' Home has been altered
and fitted up with bath, hot water, etc., for the purpose of
this Act, and the apparatus formerly used as a lethal chamber,
now answers admirably as a disinfector for clothing infested
with vermin. Sulphur di-oxide gas is used for this purpose
and the process can be easily and efficiently carried out without
any discomfort to the operator. The apparatus has another
advantage, the disinfection is so rapidly performed that the
clothes are ready for use again, by the time the person has been
bathed, with steam apparatus the process takes much longer
owing to the necessary drying.
COWSHEDS, DAIRIES, MILKSHOPS,
AND MILK SUPPLY.
There are 6 Cowsheds and 157 Registered Dairies and
Milkshops in the Borough, these are all inspected regularly.
With regard to milk, very little is produced in the Borough,
nearly the whole of the supply comes in by rail, in many
instances coming a considerable distance.
In connection with quality and adulteration, action
is taken by the County Council Authorities, who are responsible
for the working of the Food and Drugs Act, particulars of the
samples taken and results of analyses are given on page 53.
Special attention is given to the storage of milk in Dairies
and Milkshops, in order to prevent pollution gaining access to
it. A proper counter pan with well fitting and ventilated
metal cover, and provided with a hinged lid, is in all cases
insisted upon.
