To His Worship the Mayor, the Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of East Ham.
Gentlemen,
I beg to present my fifth Annual Report on the health and
sanitary condition of the Borough, together with the reports on the
work of the Isolation Hospital and Bacteriological Laboratory.
For convenience of reference, the Report to the Education
Committee is also included. This contains an account of the first
year's work in connection with the Medical Inspection of School
Children, in addition to a record of the other duties performed for
the Education Committee.
I am pleased to report that East Ham continues to maintain
its position as one of the healthiest towns in the country. Of the
76 large towns in England and Wales only one had a lower death
rate during the past year than East Ham.
Both the General Death Rate and the rate of Infantile
Mortality was the lowest hitherto recorded in the Borough. In
addition to this the Infectious Diseases Attack Rate was the lowest
recorded since the Notification Act came into force 20 years ago.
I am, Gentlemen,
Yours faithfully,
G. SOW DEN, M.D., D.P.H.
Town Hall, East Ham,
March, 1910.
