DEATHS.
For the fourth year in succession I have the pleasure of
reporting the lowest death-rate hitherto recorded in the Borough.
During the past year the number of deaths which were registered
in the district was 1.160. Of these, 26 were those of strangers
or visitors and have to be excluded, the particulars relating to
them were sent to the districts to which the persons belonged.
278 deaths were reported to me of persons belonging to the
Borough, who had died in various institutions situated outside
the district (41 occurred in the Workhouse, 125 in the Infirmary,
and 112 in various Asylums, Hospitals, &c.) Including these
we have a nett total of 1,412 deaths, (705 males and 707 females),
which is equal to a rate of 9.4 per 1,000.
The death-rate in each of the four quarters of the year was
as follows. The rates for the corresponding quarters of the
previous year are also given for comparison :—
RATE PER 1,000.
1909. 1908.
1st Quarter 12.6 11.8
2nd do. 9.5 10.0
3rd do. 8.1 10.5
4th do. 9.2 9.1
Table I on page 61 gives the deaths and death-rates for the
past 10 years. As slated above it will be seen that the rate for
the past year is the lowest yet recorded.
The chart on the opposite page gives a graphic representation
of the death-rate of' the district for the past 20 years.
