poultry-sheds have displaced many little greenhouses and flowerbeds.
One has discovered outhouses that were formerly used for
forcing plants now being used as incubators for forcing chickens.
It may be more profitable to cultivate poultry than flowers,
but the latter is cleaner and a more healthy occupation.
Dairies and Cowsheds.—There are 7 registered Cowsheds and
138 Dairies in the Borough. These have all been regularly
inspected and the provisions of the Dairies and Cowsheds
Regulationsen forced. 256 Inspections have been made and details
entered in the Dairies Register. The general condition of the
Dairies and Milk Shops may be considered good, although there
is still room for improvement. The suggestions of the Medical
Officer of Health made last year to the milk vendors have been
almost universally adopted, especially the request to provide a
properly-ventilated metal cover to the Counter Pan.
A large number of small general shops have ceased to sell
milk.
The following is a list of Cow-houses:—
Forest View Farm.
316, High Street North.
Shaftesbury Road.
55, Woodstock Road.
Fifth Avenue.
Little Ilford Lane.
Unsound Food.—The market places have been regularly
inspected, and on 12 occasions unsound food has been discovered
by an Inspector exposed for sale, on three occasions seizures were
effected, and in the remaining g cases the food was destroyed in
the Inspector's presence and the offenders cautioned.
The three seizures comprised two parcels of tomatoes and
the carcase of a tuberculous cow. In all three instances the food
was taken before a magistrate, condemned, destroyed, and
summary proceedings instituted, convictions obtained and
penalties inflicted. The case of the tuberculous cow was
considered by the magistrate to be a very serious matter for the
general public, and after patiently hearing the case at length,
fined the responsible person Twenty Pounds.
