As in previous years, cards giving information as to the
infectious nature of the disease and rules for the prevention of
infection, were sent to all cases that were reported.
Disinfection of the room or house occupied by consumptive
patients has also been undertaken, this being most often desired
after the death of a case.
In addition to the above, during the summer months, opportunity
was taken to use an empty ward at the Isolation Hospital
as a sanatorium for the treatment of cases of this disease.
From June 1st, when the first case was admitted, to the end
of September, when the ward was needed for other purposes, 12
cases were under treatment. Details as to these patients will be
found in the report on the work of the Isolation Hospital on
page 58.
The method adopted was to admit suitable cases for a short
time, not so much with the idea of curing the patient as for
educational purposes, to teach them correct methods of living,
both as regards food and fresh air, also to inculcate careful habits
as regards disposal of expectoration. They could then, when discharged,
carry out these methods at home in order to complete
their own cure. Such patients would also be able to do good by
teaching others similarly afflicted to adopt the same habits.
54 rooms were disinfected during the year, either on removal
of the patient to hospital or at the termination of the case.
In addition to the 106 deaths from Pulmonary Tuberculosis
(Phthisis) there were 69 deaths from other forms of this disease,
occurring chiefly from Tuberculosis of Intestines and Meninges.
MALIGNANT DISEASE.
77 Deaths were registered during the year, eight being due to
Sarcoma and 59 to various forms of Carcinoma, In the previous
year 74 deaths were recorded from these diseases.
The parts of the body principally attacked and the age and
sex distribution of the cases are shown in the following tables :—
