Trade Refuse.—The collection of fish offal and butchers'
refuse is largely carried out at night, with as little annoyance to
the public as possible. Special attention is given by the
Inspectors, particularly during the summer months, to see that
the collecting vans and receptacles are kept clean. Very little
difficulty is experienced in getting trade refuse that is of
commercial value removed, but it is the trade refuse that is not
which gets dumped upon vacant land and back passages to become
a nuisance. It has been the practice of the Public Health
Department to cause to be picked up by the Dustmen any
objectionable accumulation deposited about the Borough.
Petroleum Licenses.—The premises licensed by the Council
for the storage of petroleum have been systematically visited, and
the requirements incumbent upon the Licensee for the storage of
petroleum insisted upon.
Mortuaries.—Inspections of the Council's Mortuaries have
been frequently made, and they have always been found in a
creditable condition; especially does this apply to the Wakefield
Street Buildings, considering the disadvantages that have to be
encountered owing to the character of the building.
Complaints.—For the twelve months under consideration
there have been 919 complaints received, 598 written and 321
verbal, in respect to alleged nuisancer. Many of the complaints
were frivolous, and others outside the duty of an Inspector to
deal with, but in every case where nuisances existed within the
meaning of the Public Health Act, immediate action was taken
for their abatement.

Complaints were received in the different wards as follows:—

Beckton and North Woolwich Ward.Central Ward East.Central Ward West.Manor Park Ward.Plashet Ward East.Plashet Ward West.Total.
