MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH FOR YEAR 1905.
POPULATION.
The Population of the Borough at the Census in 1901 was
96,018. The Registrar-General's estimate of the population for
the middle of 1905 was 123,381. This estimate is of great
importance, as it forms the basis of calculation for many of the
rates in this report. It is essential, therefore, to obtain it with
some degree of accuracy, since an over-estimated population
would be unduly favourable by giving death and other rates
lower than was actually the case, while the reverse would occur
if the population was under-estimated.
As a check on the figures given by the Registrar-General
another method has been adopted. An enumeration of all the
houses in the Borough has been made, and assuming the number
of persons per house remains the same as at the census in 1901,
viz., 5.75, the number of occupied houses multiplied by this figure
will give the estimate required. By this method the population
in June, 1905, was 122,620.
There is, therefore, only a difference of 761 between the two
estimates. Therefore, for practical purposes the Registrar
General's figures may be taken as correct.
