LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
The principal locaa industries are Brckton Gas Works
and the Products Works in connection with the same, the Royal
Albert Docks, the Bus and Tramway Depots together with a
number of Factories and Workshops, detailed on pages 54 & 55.
SUBSOIL.
The subsoil is sand and gravel overlaying the London clay:
some of the district in the South and in the Roding Valley is
marshy.
SEWERAGE.
The Council are still giving much time and attention to the
perfecting of the Main Sewerage of the District.
New Mian Sewers have been and are still being constructed.
The rapid growth of the Borough and the development of new
estates makes immense demands upon the present system.
The purity of the effluent and the general conduct of the
operation of Sewage purification are subject to the control and
jurisdiction of the Conservators of the River Thames, whose
Inspectors regularly visit the Sewage Works, taking away with
them samples of the effluent.
The Council have recently expended considerable amounts in
the re-construction of these works with most satisfactory results,
the effluent turned out of the tanks being of a "good" class, and
capable of supporting fish life.
SEWER VENTILATION.
The ventilation of the Sewers Continues to receive that close
attention which its importance merits.
Whenever complaints are received of emissions from the
surface venti0ating grids, an inspection is made, and generally
in the immediate vicinity a tall 30 ft. shaft is put up clear of all
buildings.
