In 1898 there were 77 cases during July, August, and
September, out of a population of 70,000.
To prevent the recurrence of this great mortality among
infants, I should advise the frequent flushing of sewers, and the
ventilation of them; the earth beneath the house should be
covered by an impervious stratum of cement, so as to prevent any
gases rising into the house. Strict supervision should be given to
the food supply, especially milk, and frequent samples taken for
analysis.

Medical Officer of Health
Measles.
Thirty-three deaths were registered from Measles, as against
26 for the year 1897.
Influenza
Still continues amongst us.
Small Fox.
One case was notified of a mild type. Extra precautions were
taken, and the remainder of the family were re-vaccinated.
Puerperal Fever.
Four cases were reported, resulting in one death as against
eight cases of last year and four deaths. The houses and drains
were inspected, and every precaution taken by isolation and disinfection
to prevent recurring cases, and the nurses cautioned not to
take lying-in cases for a certain time.
