The number of births registered for the same period was
2,209, viz.: 1,150 males, and 1,059 females: this gives a
Birth Rate of 36.7 per 1,000.

Deaths of Infants.
40 7 per cent. of the total number of deaths from all diseases
were those of children under one year of age, for out of a total of
2,209 born, 335 died before reaching the age of one year.

Zymotic Death-Rate.
One hundred and fifty-nine deaths were recorded from the
seven principal Zymotic Diseases, and estimated on a population
of 60,000, gives a Zymotic Death-Rate of 2.6 per 1,000
per annum for the year 1897, as compared with 2.4 per 1,000
per annum for 1896. They were as follows :—
