The number of births registered for the same period was
2,209, viz.: 1,150 males, and 1,059 females: this gives a
Birth Rate of 36.7 per 1,000.
The following table will show some of the different rates of mortality in East Ham for each of the past three years, with those of England for 1897 :—

Deaths of Infants.
40 7 per cent. of the total number of deaths from all diseases
were those of children under one year of age, for out of a total of
2,209 born, 335 died before reaching the age of one year.
The following table will record the ages at which the deaths occurred throughout the whole District.

Zymotic Death-Rate.
One hundred and fifty-nine deaths were recorded from the
seven principal Zymotic Diseases, and estimated on a population
of 60,000, gives a Zymotic Death-Rate of 2.6 per 1,000
per annum for the year 1897, as compared with 2.4 per 1,000
per annum for 1896. They were as follows :—
