Phthisis or Pulmonary Tuberculosis
was responsible for 34 deaths (21 males, 13 females),
against 38 for the year 1909, and compared with 29
for the year 1908.
There were six deaths from other tuberculous diseases
in the district, Five were children under five years,
and one was an adult.
Voluntary notification was adopted in Chiswick in
1902, the usual fee being paid on the notification of
the diagnosis after a bacteriological examination.
A system of compulsory notification has been carried
out with success both in Sheffied and Edinburgh and
several other large towns.
I note with gratification that in the Council's Bill
now before Parliament it is proposed to make notification
compulsory in the District. The Council, as
one of the Constituent Authorities of the Middlesex
Districts Joint Smallpox Hospital Board, will have
the great advantage of sending patients suffering from
Phthisis to the Clare Hall Hospital when the Provisional
Orders of the Hospital Board have been altered
by the proposed amending Order so as to permit of
that action being taken, A Sanatorium in the County
for cases of Phthisis is much needed and there is no
reason why a Smallpox Hospital (when not in use for
Smallpox cases) should not take cases of Phthisis.
It is an established fact that in the County of
Middlesex over one-ninth of the total death rate is
due to the different forms of tuberculosis, the exact
number of deaths from this disease in 1908 being 1,267,
of which number 899 were cases of Phthisis or Pulmonary
Consumption. For every 67 persons who die
from acute infectious diseases, 60 die from Tuberculosis.
More than half the former are children under
10, whereas 81 per cent. of the deaths from Phthisis
occur in persons between 20 and 60, and 56 per cent.
between the ages of 20 and 45, this period being the
most valuable in life.
