SHOPS ACT 1950 SECTION 38 Shops require to be reasonably ventilated,
heated and lighted and there should be suitable and sufficient sanitary and
washing facilities for the persons employed therein. In this connection 12
inspections were made during the year. Notices were served in regard to un
suitable sanitary facilities found in two strops.
No certificate of exemption re provision of aanitary accommodation was
granted.
OFFICES, SHOPS AND RAILWAY PREMISES ACT 1963. The Act was parsed in

The Offices in Electrical Stations (First Aid) Regulations, 1964.
In addition to the above Orders and Regulations, twelve Circulars and
fourteen supplementary Circulars have been issued by the Minister of Labour.
As and from 1st May 1964 employers of persons and employers intending
to employ persons working in any office shop or railway premises are required
to give notice to the Council or Factory Inspector on the prescribed form. At
the end of the year the following premises were on the register
Offices 215
Retail Shops 426
Wholesale Shops, Warehouses 22
Catering establishments open to
the public, canteens 51
Fuel Storage Depots 2
These numbers are in some cases lower than might be expected and it is
probable that it has not been fully realised that the employment of even one
person for more than 21 hours per week calls for registration.
According to the returns received, 8 867 (4,456 male, 4,411 female)
persons are employed in these premises. So far no application for exemption in
regard to any of the provisions of the Act has been granted.
Employers are required to notify the Council, on a prescribed form of
accidents to employees occurring in offices, shops and railway premises and at
31st December, 1964 notification of eight such accidents had been received. It
is not considered necessary that all notified accidents should be investigated
but a decision must be made in each case. The purpose of investigation is to
find out if a breach of the Act has been committed, and to improve standards
of accident prevention. All the eight accidents notified were investigated and
suitable advice given.
The Council is required to appoint inspectors for the enforcement of
the Act. So far the work arising from the Act has been done by the Health
Department and any inspections carried out by the Public Health Inspectors.
During the year a total of 715 visits were made. Most of these were of a preliminary
and advisory nature but 138 visits were made to premises after their
registration, It is advisable that, as soon as possible after registration,
a visit of general inspection should be made. Such general inspection would be
in relation to such matters as cleanliness; overcrowding; temperature ventilation;
lighting; sanitary conveniences; washing facilities; drinking water
