MUNICIPAL RESTAURANTS AND SCHOOL CANTEENS. There is no municipal restaurant in
the Borough but during the year the 23 school canteens provided 1,499,533 meals
By the provision of new schools and the replacement of school canteens established
during the war, the facilities for meals at schools are being improved.

FOOD AND DRUGS SAMPLING. The following information on the work done in the Borough during 1961 has been supplied by the Public Control Department of Middlesex County council:-

SOFT DRINKS An imported canned vitaminised apple juice was found to be
deficient in vitamin 'C' A second sample of the same product procured a short while
afterwards was found to be correct and no further action was taken in respect of the
original sample.
NON-BREVFD CONDIMENT. A sample of non-brewed condiment purchased at a retail
shop was deficient in acetic acid. The deficiency was found to be due to an error in
dilution by the shop manager who had compounded the article from a strong solution of
acid An official caution was sent to the seller
Merchandise Marks Acts, 1887 - 1953
Inspections are carried out under the above Acts to ensure that the requirements
of the various Marking Orders relating to the indication of origin of imported foodstuffs
are applied, inspections were made at 333 premises and a total of 998 displays
were examined. Minor breaches of the Orders were dealt with by verbal warnings. Eight
more serious infringements were found and these were dealt with as indicated below
A firm of butchers who sold Argentine beef as 'English' and who described as
'Loin of Lamb' a mixture of 'Best End of Neck and Loin' were prosecuted and fined £4
and were ordered to pay £4 4s Od towards the costs.
A greengrocer who exposed for sale Canary Island potatoes falsely described as
'Jersey* was prosecuted and fined £2 with £2 2s Od towards the costs. Another greengrocer
who labelled Cyprus grapefruit as 'jaffas' was also fined £2 with £2 2s Od
costs.
A letter of caution was sent to the manufacturer of a bleach who packed his
product in various wine bottles which, in addition to the bleach label, bore the names
of wines and the trade marks of wine merchants.
