    INFANT MORTALITY. During 1959 there were 21 deaths of children under the age of 1 year. This represents an infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births of 16.5 as compared with 22. 0 for England and Wales. The causes of infant deaths are shown in Table V. In the following table, the change in the local infant mortality rate over 5 year periods from 1898 is shown:-

    MATERNAL MORTALITY. One death occurred due to causes associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Maternal deaths are usually divided into those due to septic infection and those due to diseases and other conditions associated with pregnancy and labour, and the local trend of deaths from these two causes is shown below:-

    Salvage continues to be collected at the same time as refuse and is segregated before sale. The collection of kitchen waste was discontinued in January, 1954. The returns for the past five years are as follows:-

    The Council co-operates with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research by measuring atmospheric pollution in the Borough. Two sets of apparatus are in use; one on the roof of the Health Department in Bath Road, Hounslow, and the other on the roof of Heath House, London Road, Isleworth. The detailed monthly analyses are forwarded for record and study to the Central Department, but the main features are recorded below:-

    The Council employs a Rodent Officer who is responsible for systematic inspection, planning of treatment, supervising the work of the rodent operatives and checking results. A summary of the work done in recent years is shown below:-

    As a result of these visits contraventions of the Food Hygiene Regulations were found at 21 premises and were remedied at 59 premises during the year.
