INSPECTION OF MEAT AND OTHER FOODS. In addition to those mentioned elsewhere in this report, other food premises in the Borough and the number of inspections are listed below;-

At retail premises 4,715 lbs. and 1,415 tins or packets of unsound food were
seized by, or surrendered, to the Public Health inspectors. These unsound foods were
deposited on the Council's refuse tip and immediately and adequately covered by refuse
or other material.
The following foods were brought to the Department because the purchasers were
not satisfied that they were fit for human consumption:- bread, 6; cakes, 4; chicken,
3; bacon, 3; cheese, 1; minced meat, 2; meat pie, 1; meat, 2; cereals, 2; nuts
and raisins, 1; sausage roll, 1.
The complaints were not substantiated in 11 cases; 12 official warnings were
issued and proceedings in 3 cases resulted in fines and costs amounting to £22 4s 0d.
Premises used for 'the preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted, pressed,
pickled or preserved food for sale' are required under the Pood and Drugs Act, 1955,
to be registered, and at the end of the year 107 such premises were registered.
Under Section 11 of the Middlesex County Council Act, 1950, hawkers of food
and their storage premises require to be registered, At the end of the year 29
hawkers were on the register (greengrocery 18, fish 8, ice-cream 3) and 34 inspections
of their vehicles and wares were carried out.
MUNICIPAL RESTAURANTS AND SCHOOL CANTEENS. There is no municipal restaurant
in the Borough, but during the year the 20 school canteens provided 1,336,558 meals,
By the provision of new schools and the replacement of school canteens established
during the war, the facilities for meals at schools are being improved.
