9 samples of Tinned Sardines Were examined for lead. In 8 cases
lead was absent, the remaining sample contained 4 parts of lead per
million.
8 samples said to have caused illness consisted of:—Sweets, Fish,
Cheese, Beer, Tea, Lemonade, Water and Grape Fruit Squash. Of these
the Grape Fruit Squash smelt slightly of disinfectant, and the Tea contained
75 grains of Glauber's Salt. The remaining samples were free
from deleterious ingredients or impurities.
7 samples of Water were examined. Of these 3 samples were tested
for fluorescein, an indicator used in drain testing, 2 samples of drain
Water suspected of sewage contamination were examined and 1 sample
found to be contaminated and 2 samples, complaint of taste and smell,
were satisfactory.
6 samples were examined for tin content. The following 5 samples
were satisfactory :—Tinned Fish (2), Tinned Sardines, Tinned Pilchards
and Tinned Herrings.
1 sample of Tinned Pilchards containing 2.2 grains tin per pound
was unsatisfactory.
4 samples examined with regard to their fitness for human consumption
were :—Walnuts, Milk, Sweets and Raisins. The Walnuts and
Raisins were contaminated with eggs, larvae and excremental matter
from insects.
Other samples analysed were:—Carbolic Fluid and Eggs. It was
suspected that the eggs were preserved. Eggshells are porous and eggs
are preserved by closing the pores in the shell. These treated eggs may
be either silicated, oiled or limed. In the above sample the shells were
porous so that the eggs were unpreserved, that is, either fresh eggs or
cold storage eggs.
Rag Flock Act. According to the standard of cleanliness required by the
Rag Flock Regulations, rag flock must not contain more than 30 parts of
chlorine in 100,000 parts of the flock. Two informal samples and two formal
samples were satisfactory, the chlorine content being less than 5 parts per
100,000.
