6 samples analysed were genuine, free from prohibited dyes. Of these,
1 sample contained 10 percent. of glucose and 3 samples contained 10, 38
and 21 parts sulphur dioxide respectively; 5 were labelled Full Fruit Standard
and one Lower Fruit Standard.
In my Annual Report for 1931 I commented at some length on the
unsatisfactory nature of these unofficial standards. It is pleasing to see that
the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) (Jam) Regulations, 1933
specify the quality of jam which shall be stamped with the map of England
and Wales stamp. The grade designation is Select (Fresh Fruit) Preserve.
The Schedule to these Regulations states that the preserve shall be a
single fruit jam made from fresh clean untreated fruit grown in the United
Kingdom and refined white sugar or syrup with no other added sweetening
material than invert sugar. The preserve shall contain no added colouring
or flavouring material, no added pectin or setting materials and no added
acids, and be free from foreign matter, objectionable flavour, undeveloped
fruit, etc.
The minimum quantity of fruit to be used per 100 lbs. of finished preserve
and also the percentage of soluble solids in the product is laid down.
6 samples were examined. Of these, 5 samples were free from preservative
and 1 sample contained preservative in amount less than the permitted
limit, the presence of preservative being declared.
Of 88 drugs examined, 7, or 8.0 percent., failed to comply with the
requirements of the British Pharmacopoeia and were returned as adulterated.
