Maternal
mortality.
Special investigations into all maternal deaths were carried out and reports
sent to the Ministry of Health. 5 of these were made by the Council's consultant.
12 deaths occurred—3 from sepsis and 9 from other causes.
Of these deaths 2 apparently followed procured or self-induced abortion;
one was a death from Pulmonary Embolism following a Caesarian Section
which was apparently making a good recovery; one was a complicated case
with high blood pressure who refused all treatment in the ante-natal period.
Of the 3 deaths from sepsis, one followed one of the abortion cases mentioned
above; one followed a manual removal of the Placenta; the other followed
a local infection in a case where the baby was born before the arrival of the
medical attendant.
Health
Visiting.
There are 7 Municipal Infant Welfare Centres and 9 Voluntary Centres in
the Borough. Each Centre has its own particular area, and there is no overlapping
in the visiting of the districts. Details of the work of the Health
Visitors and Centres are given on pages 35 and 36.
