There is no doubt that the question of maternal mortality is one of
primary importance to the country. A maternity scheme of a national
character is certainly the best solution of the problem.
Special investigations into Maternal deaths were carried out in two
instances during the year and reports sent to the Ministry of Health. The
number of maternal deaths in the Borough for the past five years are as
follows:—
1926 8
1927 8
1928 11
1929 12
1930 9
Infantile Mortality.
322 infants died under one year of age, or 52 less than in the previous
year.
90 belonged to the Limehouse District.
72 belonged to St. George-in-the-East.
102 belonged to Mile End Old Town.
58 belonged to the Whitechapel District.
The infantile mortality rate for the whole Borough was 76 per 1,000
births, while that for the whole of London was 59 per 1,000.
18 of the deaths were illegitimate children.
