Milk and Dairies (Amendment) Act, 1922 and Milk
and Dairies Order, 1926.
The Council has power to refuse applications for registration and to remove
persons from the Register if they are satisfied that the public health is,
or is likely to be endangered by any act or default of the person in relation
to the quality, storage or distribution of the milk.
No applications were refused by the Council though persons were removed
from the Register owing to deaths, transfer of their business to other persons,
or removal from the Borough.
No person is allowed to carry on the trade of a dairyman or use any
premises as a dairy unless he and the premises are registered.
There are 372 milkshops on the Register and 1,197 inspections were made
to them during the year. A tendency during recent years has been the
increased selling of bottled milk. This is a step in the right direction,
being more hygienic and the milk is less liable to become contaminated.
It is not necessary for the premises, where bottled milk is sold, to be
registered but the vendors must be registered.
224 persons who sell bottled milk are on the Register. In addition
there are 40 milk vendors residing outside the Borough who have barrow
rounds in Stepney.
Butter Factories and Wholesale Dealers in Margarine,
etc.
Factories of Margarine, Margarine cheese, or milk blending Butter,
Butter Factories, also premises were the business of wholesale dealer in
Margarine, Margarine cheese, or milk blended Butter is carried on, have to be
registered by the owner or occupier thereof.
There are 19 butter factories on the Register and 36 premises registered
where the business of a wholesale dealer in Margarine is carried on. 21
inspections were carried out.
No new applications for registration were received during the year.
