friais bridge, several accidents having occurred in the vicinitv
thereof, a letter was addressed to the London County Council
in whom the tramways are now vested, requesting it to terminate
the lines on the southern side of Stamford Street, where
the congestion of traffic is not so great as it is higher up towards
the bridge, and in order to avoid the crossing of the entrance
to that thoroughfare. No direct reply, other than an acknowledgment.
has been received, but the Manager of the Council's
tramways has since propounded a scheme for the extension of
several of the tramways under its control, amongst others, of
the lines in question northwards over Blackfriars Bridge into the
City and so as to terminate near the Victoria Embankment.
The Board approved this scheme but dissented from a proposal
for an extension of the lines from Newington Causeway along
the Borough High Street and Duke Street to Tooley Street,
being of opinion that the crowded condition of the Borough
High Street and the steepness of the gradient in Duke Street
would render the same impracticable.
SCHOOL BOARD PRINTING.
A circular-letter was received from the Vestry of Rotherhithe
calling attention to the large quantity of printed matter
received from the School Board for London, and expressing
an opinion that a large per centage of the same was
unnecessary. The Board concurred and caused a communication
to be addressed to the School Board suggesting that the
distribution of printed matter in future should be limited to
statements of receipt and expenditure and such other matter as
it is under statutory obligation to send to the local and rating
authorities.
NELSON SQUARE.
3The London County Council's General Powers Bill, 1898,
referring, inter alia, to Nelson Square, an extract from which
appeared in the last Annual Report, has become law (subject to
an alteration in the numbering of the clauses by which Nos.
39, 40, and 41 therein quoted have become Nos. 42, 43 and 4±
in the Act). The Council has, by letter dated the 28th April
last, called the attention of owners of property in the square to
the clause No. 43, enabling them to enter into agreements with
the Council for the removal of the gate at the entrance to the
square from Charlotte Street, and has enquired of them
whether they are prepared so to do with a view to the opening
of the locality to the free and unrestricted use of traffic.
