sought by the National Telephone Company would, if granted
seriously prejudice the rights and powers of the local authorities
and be inimical to the interests of the State and should therefore
be opposed.
The discussion, however, of this question was superseded
by Mr. Hanbury, on behalf of the Government, introducing a
Bill to the House of Commons under which, if adopted, a sum
of £2,000,000 will be expended through the agency of the Post
Office, for the development of telephonic communication throughout

WATER SUPPLY FOR ROADS, etc.
Mr. Hopkins, the Magistrate sitting at the Lambeth Police
Court, having, on the application of the Vestry of Lambeth,
decided that the rate of charge for water supplied by meter by
the Southwark & Vauxhall Water Company for the purposes of
road watering and cleansing in that Parish should be 6d. in lieu
of 8½d. per 1000 gallons, the undersigned wrote to the Company,
referring to the Magistrate's decision, and inquiring whether
they were prepared to revise their charge for water supplied
per meter for similar purposes in this district. To such letter
the Company replied as follows:—
Southwark & Vauxhall Water Company.

reply, I am directed to state that the decision of the Magistiate
to which you refer does not affect this Company other than as
regards road watering in the Parish of Lambeth, and my
Directors do not propose to reduce the charge to the board o

Yours faithfully,
Montague Watts,
W. H. Atkins, Esq., Secretary.
