The tabulated list of cases of infectious diseases coming
under my notice in the district during the past year is appended
to this report. In the early part of October six cases of children
between the ages of 3 and years were certified in two
days to be due to diphtheria, and the usual enquiries as to the
schools which they attended and possible sources of infection
elicited the fact that all the children belonged to the infant
department of a school in the Christchurch district. Accompanied
by inspector Grist, I visited this school and examined
the infants attending there, with the result that I found one
case of undoubted diphtheria and four others which were of a
suspicious nature. The case referred to was sent to hospital
where my diagnosis was confirmed. I thereupon took prompt
measures to close the school for ten days, during which time
the walls were scraped and limewashed, the floors, desks, &c.,
scrubbed with strong disinfectant, and the books removed
