MEDICAL OFFICERS REPORT.
TO THE BOARD OF WORKS FOR THE ST.
SAVIOUR'S DISTRICT.
Gentlemen,
I herewith submit to you my Annual Report for the year
ending December 31st, 1896.
The census for the County of London being now taken
quinquennially, instead of decennially, we are able to estimate
our population more accurately than heretofore.
The census returns as taken in 1896 give a combined
population for our two sub-districts of Christchurch and St.
Saviour of 25,365, of which Christchurch is credited with 13,064
and St. Saviour with 12,301. In 1891 the census returns give
a population of 13,264 to Christchurch, and 13,898 to St.
Saviour, or a combined population of 27,162. We have, therefore,
to deal with a population diminished by 1797 during the
past five years, of which number Christchurch is responsible for
a loss of 200 and St. Saviour for 1597.
In Christchurch sub-district the number of births registered
during the year 1896 were 398, of which 207 were males and
191 females : while in the St. Saviour sub-district there were
registered 379 births, 196 being males, 133 females. This gives
the total number of births for the whole district as 777, of
which 403 were males and 374 females. If we take the population
according to the official census of 1896 this gives us a
birth-rate of 30.6 per thousand. This, however cannot be
